A : III. 어떻게 사무실에서 그린 그림을
전시장에 가지고 갈 수 있을까?
지난 6월부터 아버지 사무실 방 하나를 빌려 그림을 그리고 있다. 판데믹 때문에 어디 돌아다니지도 못하고, 학교도 잘 가지 못한다. 그래서 약 반년 동안 집과 사무실만 오가는 생활을 했다. 나는 여기 고립되어 무슨 그림을 그리는 게 맞을까?

작업 여건은 그림의 크기를 결정하는 요인 중 하나이다. 중세 네덜란드, 집의 너비에 따라 과세를 하는 제도로 인해 좁고 긴 집이 만연했다. 그리고 이에 맞춰 그림의 크기도 작아졌다. 수묵화는 일반적으로 쭈구리고 앉은 상태로 종이에 그려진다. 그리고 족자로 보관하거나 병풍으로 만든다. 제작할 수 있는 종이의 크기에 제한이 있었기도 했거니와, 쭈구려 앉아서 그릴 수 있는 크기, 말아서 보관하거나 운반할 수 있는 크기는 수묵화의 크기 폭에 제한을 주었다. 작업 여건의 영향은 오늘날에도 찾아 볼 수 있다. 최근 학교에 갈 수 없어서 개인 작업실을 구하는 사람들이 주변에 많다. 이들이 작업실을 구할 때 중요시하는 것은 보통 문의 크기, 집 앞의 주차 여건, 대중교통의 유무, 등이 있었다. 문이 클수록 그릴 수 있는 그림의 사이즈는 커질 수 있고, 현관문 바로 앞에 주차를 하기 어렵다면 그 거리만큼 그림을 옮기는데 필요한 인건비가 늘어난다.

작업 환경은 작가와 작업물에 무시할 수 없는 영향을 미친다. 어쩌면 디지털무빙이미지가 지속 발전하는 이유도 서울의 집값이 비싼 것과 관련 있을지도 모른다. 그렇다면 내가 처한 이 환경에서 추출할 수 있는 작업물은 어떤 종류로 한정할 수 있을까?

현존하는 사무실은 어떤 편의로 인해 지금의 스케일을 가지게 되었을까? 사무실에서 사용하는 종이를 살펴보자. 내가 사용하는 이 사무실은 주로 자료 출판 업무를 하는 관계로 인쇄물 더미가 많이 쌓여있다. 여기 쌓여있는 더미들은 A4(210x297cm), A3(297x420cm) 이렇게 두 종류가 있다. 대부분 A4를 많이 사용하고 최종 편집 시에 판본 사이즈에 맞춰 A3가 사용된다. 왜 이렇게 A4용지가 많이 사용되는 걸까?
동시대 인쇄물의 기준은 A4용지라고 말할 수 있을 정도로 A4용지는 많은 방면에서 사용되고 있다. A4용지는 국제규격 ISO216에 의거해 공문서 등에서부터 사용하기 시작했다고 한다. 종이 절단 과정에서 최소한의 손실이 생기는 사이즈이기 때문에 종횡비 약 1:√2의 A판형이 국제규격으로 선택되었다. A4용지를 상용하기 전에는 국배판(218x304cm), B5(ISO176x250cm, JIS182x257cm) 등 회사마다, 기관마다 다른 용지 양식을 사용했다고 한다.
A4용지가 동시대 인쇄용지의 표본인 것을 확인할 수 있는 증거는 그 보조도구, 파일, 서류함, 결재판 등이 상당수 A4용지에 맞춰 제작되고 있다는 점이다. 비록 A4용지가 사무실의 편의가 아닌 제조 과정에서의 경제면에서 상용화되기 시작했지만, 분명 A4는 현재 사무실의 스케일을 지정하는데 있어서 앞서 제시한 증거보다 훨씬 더 많은 영향을 줬다. 예를 들어, 사무실 책상의 폭은 모니터와 키보드가 자리하고 그 앞에 서류까지 놓을 수 있는 폭 이상을 필요로 할 것이고, 책상 서랍 역시 서류가 들어있는 파일이 여유 있게 들어갈 수 있는 크기 이상을 필요로 할 것이다. 이외에도 알게 모르게 사무실은 A4용지 규격의 간섭을 받고 있을 것이다.
이와 같은 사무실의 조건 중 가장 먼저 떠오른 요소는 바로 가방이다. 상당수의 가방 또한 A4용지 사이즈를 운반하는데 맞춰서 디자인된다. 내가 가지고 있는 가방들도 대부분 A4 혹은 A5의 운반에 알맞은 사이즈이다. 가방은 사무실에서 그린 그림을 전시장으로 가지고 가는데 있어서 가장 현실적이고 경제적인 방법이다.
2017년, 동양화가이신 할아버지가 계신 친구에게서 친구 할아버지의 수묵화를 선물 받은 적이있다. 친구 작업실 책꽂이에 꽂혀있던 진녹색 서류봉투에 그 그림이 들어있었다. 전혀 그림인 척하지 않고 있던 서류봉투 안에는 대나무 두 개와 알 수 없는 한자가 적힌 수묵화와 함께 추가 설명 서류, 진품확인서 등이 동봉되어 있었다. 그림은 추가 설명 서류에 의하면 61 x 83cm이고, 세로로 3번, 가로로 1번 접혀 서류봉투 안에 조금 더 작은 흰색 서류봉투에 들어있었다. 이 그림은 그 친구의 작업실 책꽂이에서 나와 이제는 내가 작업실로 사용하는 사무실의 책장 한 쪽에 꽂혀있다. 이 그림은 그 친구의 할아버지의 작업실에서 그려져 서류봉투에 포장되어, 그 친구를 거쳐 내게 왔다.
이 그림이 4번이나 접혀서 서류봉투에 들어있는 이유는 이와 같은 그림의 이동경로를 통해 유추해 볼 수 있다. 동봉된 추가 설명 서류에 화백이 요구하는 표구의 종류가 상세히 기술되어있던 것으로 보아 이 그림은 친구를 통해 누군가에게 전달되어 전시될 목적이었을 것으로 생각된다. 전달자인 친구는 면허가 없었기에 표구가 완료된 그림의 상태로는 운반이 어려웠을 것이다. 그래서 접혀도 다시 펼 수 있는 한지의 특성을 이용해 서류봉투로 운반했을 것이다. 혹은 나만 몰랐던 것일 뿐, 관행적으로 현대 수묵화는 이렇게 접어 서류봉투에 보관하고 있는 것일 수도 있겠다. 아무튼 간에 서류봉투는 친구가 친구 할아버지의 그림을 운반하는 이상적인 매체였음은 부정할 수 없다.
그리고 작업실로 사용하는 사무실에서 그린 그림을 17km 떨어진 교실에서 전시와 발표를 해야 하는 나의 입장에서도 마찬가지로 서류봉투는 최적의 운반 매체임이 틀림없다. 또한 A4 사이즈에 알맞은 사무실에서 보관할 때에 있어서도 친구 할아버지의 그림과 함께 책장 한 쪽에 차곡차곡 안전하게 세워둘 수 있다. 운반에 있어서 서류봉투의 또 다른 장점은 가방과의 상성이다. 가방에 넣어 운반할 때에도 가방이 A4용지의 운반에 알맞게 디자인됐기에 최소한의 구김으로 운반할 수 있다. 서류봉투에 보관하는 그림은 내가 처한 환경과 가장 안성맞춤이다.
사실 이 사무실처럼 출판물과 관련 있는 업무를 하는 사무실이 아니라면 사무실에서 종이를 그렇게 많이 사용하지 않는다고 들었다. 종이를 줄이려는 노력도 포함해서 대부분의 결제를 컴퓨터로 진행하기에 특별한 일이 아니고서야 서류철이 꼭 필요하지 않다고 한다. 기존에 모니터와 종이, 이렇게 두 화면을 통해 멀티태스킹을 하던 사무실은 두 대 혹은 세 대의 모니터를 통해 멀티태스킹을 하는 사무실로 바뀌었다. 그래서 실상 A4용지가 사무실을 대변한다고는 말할 수 없다. 단지 사무실에서 작업하기에, 운반하기에 알맞은 사이즈가 A4용지인 것이다.
앞서 말했듯이 사무실의 규격은 A4용지에 알맞게 고안되어 있다. 책장에 서류봉투를 보관하는 것이 편한 것, 책상이 A4용지를 이용해 작업하기에 편한 것, 심지어 스캐너가 A4규격을 한 번에 스캔할 수 있도록 고안되어 있는 것까지도, 내가 사무실에서 A4규격의 작업을 하는 것이 편한 건 사무실이 그렇게 만들어졌기 때문이다. 이외에도 알지 못하는 간접적인 디자인들이 내가 A4규격의 작업을 편하게 진행하도록 돕고 있을 것이다. 비록 일반 사무실에서 A4용지의 사용빈도가 현저하게 줄었어도 이미 사무실의 스케일은 A4용지에 알맞게 만들어졌다. 또한 A4용지에 알맞게 만들어진 사무실의 스케일이 곧 사무실이라는 느낌을 감지하게 만들 터이다.
A:III. How can paintings made in the office
be transported to an exhibition hall
Since last June, I have painted in a room of an office that I rented from my father. Due to the pandemic, I could not get around or go to school. So, I had a life only going to the office and home for about a half year. What kind of paintings can I draw in such isolation?

The working environment is one of the most essential elements to decide a scale of work. In the Duch Middle Ages, as a taxation system that measures the tax according to the breadth of a house, There were so many narrow and long houses. And with this condition, the paintings’ size became smaller. Another example is Sumi-e. The Sumi-e was drawn on a paper with the crouched posture and stored by folding screens or scrolls. Having a limitation of the paper size that can be produced, the suitability of drawing with the crouched pose and the possibility of storing and transporting in the rolled state affected the width of Sumi-e-paper. Today, the effect of the working environment on works still exist. Nowadays, As not going to a school workroom, many students rent a personal workroom. When finding workrooms, important considerations are the size of doors, the possibility of parking, and accessibility of public transit. The larger the exits are, the bigger the works become. And if a parking lot is far, that distance would increase the labour costs required to move the painting.

The working environment gives the influence to be reckoned with by the artist. Maybe the reason the work of digital moving images is grown rapidly is related to the growth of house prices in Seoul. Then, which categories could work extracted from the environment I am facing restrict?

For what convenience did the existing office have today's scale? Let's observe papers used in the office. This office I use mainly works in the publishing business, so there are a lot of piles of printed paper. The papers piled up here are A4 (210x297cm) and A3 (297x420cm). Almost using the A4 size, A3 is used to match the size of the edition for the final editing. Why is A4 used mainly? A4 is used in many fields, saying it is the contemporary printing main criterion. A4 made in accordance with the international standard ISO216 began to be used in public documentation. And the reason why A4 is chosen as the international standard is that A size with an aspect ratio of approximately 1:√2 has the least loss in the production process. Before A4 was used commonly, different companies and institutions used various forms of paper, the size of double-small octavo (218x304cm), B5 (ISO176x250cm, JIS182x257cm), and so on.
Evidence to confirm that A4 paper is a sample of recent printing paper is that many binders, filing cabinets, and approved document boards are being produced according to A4 paper. Although A4 paper has begun to commercialize in terms of economics in the manufacturing process rather than the convenience in the office, it certainly has far more impact on the scale in the current office than the presented evidence. For instance, the width of an office desk needs to the wider than placing a monitor and a keyboard and putting papers and desk cabinets need to be an appropriate size being able to put the files containing the documents in. Besides, the office is unknowingly receiving interference from A4 papers.
Likewise, a bag is the first constituent that comes to mind in office conditions. Most bags are designed to transport A4 size papers. Also, most of my bags are the size suitable for moving A4 or A5 size papers. And a bag is the most economical way to transport the works made in the office to the exhibition hall.
In 2017, I received the Sumi-e as a gift from my friend’s grandfather, who is an Eastern-style painter. The painting was contained in a dark green paper bag that was on the shelf of my friend's studio. The paper bag, which was not pretending to be a painting at all, contained Sumi-e with two bamboo trees and unknown Chinese characters, as well as additional explanatory documents and authenticity confirmations. According to the enclosed documents, the painting was 61 by 83 centimetres long, and it was in the white paper bag in the dark green paper bag, folded three times vertically and once horizontally. Now, this painting which came from my friend’s shelf is on one side of the shelf in the office I use as my studio. So this painting was drawn in his grandfather's studio, wrapped in a paper bag, and came to me through her.
The reason why the painting is folded four times and contained in a paper bag can be inferred from the path of movement of the painting. Given that the accompanying additional explanatory documents detailing the type of frame the artist requires, it is believed that the painting was intended to be delivered to someone through my friend and displayed. My friend, the forwarder, did not have a license. So, it would have been not easy to transport the painting with a completed frame. Therefore, it would have been carried in a paper bag using the characteristics of Korean paper that can be folded and unfolded again. Or maybe I'm the only one who didn't know, but in practice, modern ink paintings are folded like this and stored in paper bags. Anyway, I can't deny that the paper bag was the ideal medium for my friend to carry her grandfather's painting.
And the paper bags must be the best transport medium for me to display and present the paintings drawn in my studio in the classroom 17 kilometres away. In addition, when storing it in the office suitable for A4 size, it can be safely placed on one side of the shelf along with the painting of my friend's grandfather. Another advantage of paper bags in transport is their chemistry with bags. When carried in a bag, the bag is designed to be carried adequately on A4 paper so that it can be carried with minimal wrinkles. Keeping a painting in a paper bag is the best fit for my environment.
In fact, I was told that the current offices do not use that much paper unless it is an office that works with publications like here. And along with the effort to reduce the amount of paper, most current office works are handled by the computer, so it is said that the paper document is not necessary unless it is something special. The office conditions previously multi-tasked through monitors and paper screens have been turned into where two or three monitors are multi-tasked. So it can not be said that the A4 paper actually represents the office. I can only say that the A4 paper is the right size to carry and work in the office.
The office standard is fitted at the size of A4. From the convenience of keeping paper bags in the bookshelf to the comfort of using A4 paper on the desk to work on, to even having scanners designed to scan A4 standards at once, it is convenient for me to work with A4 standards in the office because the office was created like that. Also, I don't feel other indirect designs will help me carry out the work of the A4 standard comfortably. Although the frequency of use of A4 paper in general offices has been significantly reduced, the scale of the office has already been tailored to A4 paper. Also, the A4 scale of the office makes me feel the place is an office.
